Pest Description

Larvae are spread via natural dispersion from newly hatched larvae hanging from host trees on silken threads, and dispersed by winds that travel greater than one mile. Larvae are the primary concern for this pest, which uses five larval cycles. The larvae eat during the day in the first three instars and eat nocturnally during the fourth and fifth instar.

Primary Crops Affected

Primarily destroy foliage on hardwoods, and in the East Continental US they prefer oaks, apple, sweetgum, speckled alder, basswood, gray and white burch, poplar, willow, and hawthorn.
